Tony Dunphy asked:
What is ISDN 2 & ISDN 10/20/30?
ISDN (integrated Subscriber digital network) is a Digital Phone service as opposed to the traditional Analogue Phone service. ISDN is mainly used by business for voice calls but prior to deep *********** of ADSL Internet, ISDN was used as a higher speed Internet product as it could carry twice the speed of data as PSTN.
In Australia ISDN comes in two configurations: ISDN 2 Basic rate and ISDN 10/20/30 Primary rate. In Australia Telstra brands its ISDN products as Telstra On Ramp.
ISDN 2 is mainly used for businesses that need up to 8 phone lines. The lines are integrated in multiples of 2’s (2, 4, 6, or 8 phone lines or channels). With ISDN 2 You also have the option of a Direct In Dial (DID) Number Range.
ISDN 10/20/30 digital phone lines are a larger capacity services that can carry up to 30 individual lines or channels. Configurations available on ISDN 10/20/30 are 10, 20 or 30 Channels. When installing ISDN 10/20/30 a large capacity cable is put in and the required number of channels are activated. This makes upgrading from ISDN 10 to ISDN 20 relatively easy and the cable is already in place and all that is required is activation of the services.ISDN 10/20/30 is also know as Primary Rate PRA Digital ISDN service or On Ramp.
ISDN services provide better functionality when connected via digital PABX Phone systems and can also provide crisper call quality due to the Digital Transmission. At the telaustralia website there is a lot of information on ISDN 102030

A Direct In Dial Multiple Number Range allows you to have more phone numbers than lines On ISDN 10 20 30 you can have Indial Ranges of 100 numbers and up to 3 X 100 Number Indial ranges. E.g Hotels may have only 10 lines but a direct dial number for each room.
With Direct Indial, every extension or department can be allocated a unique telephone number for callers to bypass reception and dial direct. Indial numbers can be set up to ring at different destinations for day or night service.
And because DID Direct In Dial can be used to measure the volume and source of incoming calls, your company can monitor the effectiveness of your advertising by allocating different terminating numbers to each campaign eg a different number in your print or television commercials to measure the most effective media method.
ISDN 102/30 connections can be expensive. Telaustralia has a free ISDN connection offer at http://www.telaustralia.com.au/fixed_line/new_business_phones
If to be used for data ISDN 10/20/30 Business Phone lines can provide up to 30 x 64kbps data channels. Prior to ADSL many ISP used multiple ISDN 30s to carry their Dial Up Internet Services.
Industries that may be interested in an ISDN 10/20/30 phone system are call centers and other businesses that require multiple phone lines or extensions. With the ISDN, those with business phones can have digital access to switched voice and data over the network connection.
A ISDN 2 or ISDN 10/20/30 voice services can be used for all normal calling types including including national calls, local calls, mobile calls, international calls, and special service calls. Dialing and disconnection are also faster, allowing for even more increases in business efficiency and potential for profitability.
