How to Work Less and Gain More by Understanding the 80/20 Principle

April 17th, 2008

Tristan Loo asked:

In 1895, Italian economist, Dilfredo Pareto, first wrote about the principle known as the Pareto Principle or the 80/20 Rule. The 80/20 Rule according to Pareto simply meant that the top 20% of people in a given society possessed all the money and influence while the other 80% possessed very little power and influence.

Productivity experts later discovered that the same 80/20 Rule applied to time management and personal productivity as it did with economics. Productivity experts used the Pareto Principle arguable to state that only 20% of a person’s daily activities would account for 80% of their given results. They also claimed that 20% of products would account for 80% of a business’s profit; or 20% of a consultant’s services accounts for 80% of their profits; or that 20% of customers would account for 80% of all sales.

What does the 80/20 Rule Mean for Personal Productivity?

Having worked in the capacity as a manger, I can tell you that most people spend most of their time on the 80% of activities that generate little to no value and they procrastinate on the top 20% of their daily activities that are of the highest value. Take a look at your own life to witness this for yourself. Go to your work place or go to your school and notice people who appear to be busy throughout the entire day but who produce very little in the way of their own personal productivity or value for the company that they are working. How can people who are so busy not produce anything at all or very little? It is simply because they are slaves to the 80/20 Rule and spending the bulk of their day or their entire day focusing their attention on tasks or activities that are very low in value for themselves or for their company and they put off the activities that can produce a very high rate of return for themselves or their company. Why is that? It is my experience that people procrastinate or never get around to those high value activities that are in the top 20% of their daily activities simply because those top 20% of activities are typically the longest, or the most difficult or the most challenging or the most complex activities that they have to deal with and they simply don’t want to dedicate their time or resources on those given tasks that will produce results for them and their company. Instead they busy themselves with the smaller, easier to do tasks that produce a very small amount of return for them.

So how can you use the 80/20 Rule to your Advantage?

Before you invest your time into any activity that you do you must first ask yourself is this task in the bottom 80% that will not produce any value for me or my company or is this task in the upper 20% that is going to produce value for me or my company. Ask yourself this question first and come up with an answer before you invest your time in anything that you do.

Look back on the activities that you did in the past week. And ask yourself have you been spending your time on activities that produce little value for yourself. If the answer is yes, then more than likely you have taken to the bad habit of dealing with the 80% of low value activities in your life instead of attacking the top 20% of value producing activities. You want to make a conscious effort today, right now, to change that habit to invest your time in the top 20% instead of the lower 80%. How can you achieve this? The easiest way to put this change of habit into effect is by writing all the tasks you must accomplish today. Once you have done that, next to each task write whether it falls into the 80% (low producing category) or the top 20% (the value producing category). I suggest writing this on paper because getting it on paper allows you to visualize the changes that you need to make. Also by getting it onto paper it allows your subconscious mind to start processing and putting into action the necessary steps for change.

The benefits of attacking the top 20% of activities first every day is that not only will your level of success, productivity and value increase dramatically but also the amount of satisfaction, pride, and your overall health and well-being will go up dramatically. By attacking the top 20% first you effectively create a lot of momentum for yourself because you are able to get the burdensome or most complex tasks out of the way in the very beginning and getting the rest of the 80% of tasks that you have to get done is just a downhill ride from there. In order to change your life today, make a conscious effort to transfer your valuable time to those things that are important in your life that will produce results.

Forex Money Management - Incorporating the 80-20 Rule for Triple Digit Gains

Kelly Price asked:

Forex money management is the hardest part of forex trading and most traders simply make errors that doom them to failure. Here we will look at how understanding the 80 / 20 rule and using it in your trading system can make you bigger profits with less risk…

The 80 / 20 rule is simple and states:

That a small number of causes (20%) is responsible for a large percentage (80%) of the effect. The principle was named after the Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, who noted that 80% of income in Italy was received by just 20% of the population. The value of the Pareto Principle in life and forex trading is - it tells you to focus on the 20 percent of your trading that really matters.

Most traders simply trade too much and the 20% that matters are really just the high odds trades - get rid of the marginal and low odds trades and trade high odds set ups only.

The fact is many traders think the more they trade the better and the more chance they have of enjoying currency trading success. Most try trading the market noise and try forex day trading or scalping - but they are doomed to failure and get wiped out. Trading profits are not correlated to how often you trade, as you are only judged on being right with your trading signal.

If you trade 100 times or twice all that matters is the amount of money you put in the bank from your market timing.

I know traders who trade just a few times a year and make somewhere between 100 - 200% just simply because they wait for high odds trades, hit them and hold them.

Trading less, is more time efficient and more profitable.

Look at any new traders account and they will be over trading and if you make the mistake of taking marginal trades you will lose.

Money management is all about protecting the account equity you a have and if you focus on high odds set ups only, you are going to increase your profit potential overall.

The 80 / 20 rule works in forex trading just as it does in all areas of life and if you use it in forex trading you will focusing on making money and that at the end of the day, is what forex trading is all about.

So think about it, apply it, watch your profits soar and your account equity risk decline and get on the road to currency trading success.

Crunchy Nuts And Seeds Are Healthy Food Snacks

Brenda Skidmore asked:

Are you looking for some delicious, alternative dietary choices to replace those highly processed sugar, and hydrogenated fat food snacks? If so, look no further than to nuts or seeds. Most people do not even consider them, avoiding nuts or seeds, altogether, because of their high fat and calorie content. While it is true that they are high in both, shunning them from your diet for these reasons, alone, will have you missing out on a wide array of other important nutrients.

Nuts and seeds, depending on the variety, are quite a nutrient dense food. Nutritional research science studies are finding out, that people who eat 1 to 3 ounces of nuts regularly have fewer risks of developing heart disease, cancer, and lessens the severity of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

These foods are healthy food snack choices, and although they are nutritious, some people may have a hard time not over indulging on them. As with any other diet choice, healthy or unhealthy, moderation is the key.

There is a way, though, that you can improve upon the nutritional aspect to eating them even further. Try eating them dry roasted. Avoid most commercially processed brands, which are slathered in several unhealthy varieties of processed polyunsaturated fats like cottonseed, rapeseed, and soybean oils, and coated in nutrient deficient processed salt.

While everyone may not have this convenience in their own backyard, Amish community bulk food stores are a wonderful resource for finding many different kinds of fresh, raw nuts and seeds. Roasting them does lessen the nutritional value slightly, but you can do this at home rather easily, and you will have a much healthier snack product afterwards. Coat the nuts or seeds with a little coconut oil, sprinkle with sea salt, bake in the oven, and store in an air-tight container.

Nuts and seeds are high in mostly monounsaturated fat and, to a lesser degree, polyunsaturated fat. They are also good sources of antioxidant vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, fiber, and cholesterol lowering phytosterols.

When choosing to add them for health conscious reasons, to your existing diet, don’t consider them as a fix-all approach for poor eating habits. Look at them as a replacement therapy tool, in getting rid of the processed fatty meat snacks, other fried foods, and sugar laden treats out of your diet. Nuts and seeds can help you with weight management issues, because of their high percentage of healthy fats, protein, and fiber content. They provide a ‘full’ feeling of satiety when combined with a full glass of water.

Most nuts and seeds are high in calcium, magnesium, and potassium. These minerals help to control blood pressure, while their naturally high fiber content helps protect against colon cancer.

As an example, of the nutritional powerhouse that can be found in nuts and seeds, a listing of the content in certain types of nuts and seeds is provided below for your information. One hundred grams equals, approximately, a 3.5 ounce serving.

Seeds: Pumpkin-100 g pumpkin seeds contain 29 g protein, 11.2 mg iron, and 1144 mg phosphorous. Sesame- 100 g of sesame seeds contain 26.4 g protein, 12.6 mg vitamin B-3, 7.8 mg iron, 131 mg calcium, and 10.3 mg zinc. Sunflower- 100 g sunflower seeds are an excellent source of potassium and magnesium and contain 24 g protein, 7.1 mg iron, and 120 mg calcium. Flax seeds- 100 g flax seeds contain 431 mg magnesium, 831 mg potassium, and 112 g folic acid, not to mention its high omega-3 content.

Nuts: Almonds- 100 g almonds contain 16.9 g protein, 4.2 mg iron, 250 mg calcium, 20 mg vitamin E, 3.1 mg zinc, and 0.92 mg vitamin B-2. Cashews- 100 g cashews contain 17.2 g protein, 60 micrograms vitamin A, and 3.8 mg iron. Peanuts- 100 g peanuts contain 2.3 g protein, 2 mg iron, and 3 mg zinc. Pecans- 100 g pecans contain 9.2 g protein, a very high fat content of 71.2 g (of which, 60 percent is mono and 30 percent is polyunsaturated), 130 micrograms vitamin A (also very high), 2.4 g iron, and 73 mg calcium.

And, while there is definitely more nutritional content in each one of those food sources listed above, nutritional research science is still discovering, and identifying, even more unique and natural food substances in all of our plant foods every day.

One thing is for certain, we are all living through one of the most interesting generations to date. For the first time in history, man’s curiosity has him seriously investigating the perfect union nutritional path nature intended all of us to strictly follow.

What is being learned today, about eating beneficial plant foods in their truest and unadulterated forms, will help future generations wipe out many modern diseases that are, now, plaguing most modern cultures. Although this one aspect, alone, is not the complete answer to all of modern society’s health care woes, these new nutritional discoveries being uncovered today will definitely help more people lead healthier and happier lives tomorrow, in body, mind, and spirit.

5 Countries Where Marijuana is Legal (Almost!)

April 12th, 2008
legalization of marijuana
Robert Kane asked:

Marijuana users have always sought legal loopholes in countries where it is illegal to own or smoke it. Many people choose to buy marijuana seeds (which is legal in many places), then grow and smoke their own (which is not!) But every marijuana smoker has probably dreamed at one point or another of living in a country where marijuana is legal - or at least where the “rules” concerning possession are so lax that it is effectively legal.

Most people know about Holland’s famously relaxed laws regarding marijuana (which is why it doesn’t feature on the list below!) While no other country has achieved such high profile recognition for making marijuana legal, a number of places around the world have quietly relaxed their laws concerning possession for personal use. In most of these countries, possession still remains technically illegal, but penalties are not enforced if you are within certain guidelines - this is known as decriminalisation.

So, if living in a country where marijuana possession isn’t punished by the law sounds like heaven, here are five places you should consider emigrating!

Argentina

After a recent court debate about whether or not to punish those who buy and grow marijuana, Argentina has effectively made marijuana legal if it is in small quantities for personal use. A leading judge in Argentina even decided that it was “unconstitutional” to legislate against marijuana possession! Those who buy marijuana seeds and grow their own are also leniently treated, so long as they are growing a small number of plants. The country is also notably supportive of several medical marijuana programs.

Australia

Before you go booking a one way ticket to Sydney, make sure you do your research. Different regions have different rules, but Western Australia, Southern Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Queensland have all decriminalised marijuana to a certain degree. In Tasmania, Victoria and Queensland, police have taken to “ticketing” those caught with less than 50 grams of marijuana rather than arresting them, and Western and Southern Australia have instituted on the spot fines for minor possession rather than official warnings or arrests.

Belgium

Since 2003, the Belgian government has made the possession and use of marijuana legal under the following conditions:

• The amount possessed is 5 grams or less

• You are over 18

• You do not smoke in the presence of minors

• You do not smoke in public

You can buy marijuana seeds and grow them in Belgium without penalty - however, you are only allowed to own one female plant. The purchase and sale of marijuana is still illegal, but most Belgians simply get their marijuana in Holland.

Colombia

Colombia, has had relaxed laws concerning drug possession for over ten years. Possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana, one gram of cocaine and one gram of heroin is not considered to be illegal, although things may change - recent conservative governments have considered repealing this law to combat Colombia’s drug culture.

Nepal

Unlike the other countries on this list, Nepal doesn’t have an actual decriminalisation policy towards marijuana - it’s rather that the laws they have are hardly ever enforced! Marijuana used to be legal in Nepal, making it a hippy Mecca in the 1960’s and early 70’s. It has been illegal since 1973 - not that you’d notice. Marijuana is widely available and used, especially by Nepalese holy men. Note that smuggling and growing are punished, but possession and personal use rarely are - if the police catch you smoking they will stop you, but only to collect a small bribe!
